Welcome to the About page for the Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC), where you can learn more about who we are, what we do, and why we’re important.

At RSSAC, we are a group of technical experts who provide advice and guidance to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on matters related to the operation, administration, security, and integrity of the root server system. The root server system is a critical component of the Internet’s infrastructure, responsible for providing authoritative information that enables domain names to be resolved to IP addresses. The system consists of a global network of 13 root servers that collectively manage the root zone file.

Our mission at RSSAC is to ensure the continued operation and improvement of the root server system, so that it remains a reliable and secure foundation for the functioning of the Internet. We do this by examining the impact of emerging technologies on the root server system and identifying future challenges that need to be addressed. We also provide advice and guidance to ICANN on matters related to the root server system, and we facilitate greater cooperation and coordination among the operators of the root server system and other Internet stakeholders.

Our members at RSSAC are drawn from a wide range of technical backgrounds and are appointed by the ICANN Board of Directors. We bring together expertise in areas such as network engineering, security, data analytics, and policy development. Our members have a deep understanding of the technical and operational aspects of the root server system, and we work together to provide independent advice and recommendations to ICANN on matters related to the system’s operation and improvement.

At RSSAC, we are proud of the important role that we play in ensuring the security and stability of the Internet’s infrastructure. Our work is critical to ensuring that the root server system remains a reliable and secure foundation for the functioning of the Internet, both now and in the future. We are committed to working together with ICANN, the operators of the root server system, and other Internet stakeholders to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and to ensure that the Internet remains a trusted and essential resource for people around the world.
